Before You Sign Up for Celcom Broadband

I just want to share my unpleasant experience using Celcom broadband service. In May last year, I bought a CELCOM 3G modem and sign up for a RM98 monthly broadband service. The price of the modem was discounted at RM 499 but I have a 12-month contract with Celcom. I thought that this was a pretty good deal since I got the modem at a cheaper price (regular price is RM699) and I have no problem with the 12-month contract, because I really needed a mobile broadband internet connection.

In February this year, the modem had a problem. It could not connect to the internet. At first, I thought there was a problem with the 3G signal, so I switched the modem to receiving GPRS signal, but then suddenly my computer could not detect the modem.

Luckily, the modem has a 1-year warranty so I sent it back to the modem seller in Alor Star. The seller sent the modem to Huawei distributor (Ten Ten Telecommunication) for it to be fixed. It took a long time for the modem distributor to fix the modem. I first sent my modem to be fixed in the first week of March and I only got it back about three weeks later. But to my surprise, the problem persisted. I sent it back for repair on 31st March and until today, I still have not received the modem.

To make things worse, I called Celcom to temporarily disconnect my service, at least until I get the modem fixed, but I was told that if I do that I will be penalized RM 350. So the moral of the story is if you want to get Celcom Broadband, don't sign up for the promotion package that allows you to buy the modem at a cheaper price. This package comes with a contract (12-month or 18-month contract). Later, when you have problems with your modem, you will still have to make monthly payment to Celcom. If you disconnect, even temporarily, you will be charged a penalty. Celcom is not sympathetic to your problem. So protect yourself and get a contract-free service.

  2. Thanks for the sympathy. I already signed up for Streamyx last week. The connection is activated yesterday. Now I can surf the net with broadband at home but I have to pay RM 110 per month for Streamyx plus RM98 for Celcom Broadband. I think I will cancel my Celcom Broadband service after my 12-month contract expires.

  3. i just signed up celcom broadband basic package last Sunday.
the dealer told me that this package has no contract and you can get full refund if i not satisfied within 1 week at celcom center. But from what i read from celcom FAQ, it said bb package must terminate at dealer there.
it is kinda confusing because what dealer and celcom tell me is totally different.
